Summer has arrived, and it’s an exciting time as we transition from springtime. However, it’s also essential to take action to avoid potential plumbing, drain system, and sewage works issues in your home.

Arch Plumbing has compiled some tips to help you prepare your home’s plumbing systems for the warm weather. These steps will not only save you money but also conserve energy.

Summer brings more outdoor activities, so you will have more clothes to wash.

  • Check your washer hoses for bulges, leaks, or cracks. Ensure that your machines are at least four inches away from the wall to prevent hoses from kinking or breaking. Do not leave your home while the washer is running; replace your hoses every three years.

During the wet summer months

  • ductwork sweats and condenses, leading to backups if the drains are blocked. The seams may also leak, resulting in condensation. For attics, check that there’s no water in the drain pan. If you notice water, contact your local plumber immediately, as your ceiling may be at risk.

After your BBQ or picnic

  • be careful what you dispose of in your kitchen appliances. Most appliances cannot handle stringy foods like celery, banana peels, and cornhusks.
  • Do not pour fats or oils down your drain, as they can form clots in the pipes. Avoid stuffing potato mixes or “just-add-water” food items down the drain, as they can cause an instant clog when mixed with water.
  • Running cold water at full pressure for fifteen seconds before and after disposing of anything in the disposal can ensure that it gets flushed through.

Before going on vacation, turn down the temperature of your tank to save money and energy.

  • During this time of year, sewer lines typically get clogged due to fresh summer water entering the pipes through tiny cracks.
  • New tree root growth from the spring can also cause sewer backup problems as roots grow toward the main source of nutrition.

Hire an authorized plumber to inspect your main pipes. They’ll determine if you’re susceptible to any main issues or damage. Your Local plumber will help you understand the best treatment options for proper drain cleaning.
