There are two common plumbing issues that we typically experience during dry weather: sewage odors and pipeline cracks.
Sewage Odors
Sewage odors and backflow occur in very dry areas because water is not flowing through the pipes constantly. Dirt and residue, such as dry leaves, can get stuck in the pipes.
If there’s no water to flush these items out, you may get an odor. Pipes can become so clogged that water cannot pass through, causing water heaters to malfunction. If your home is old, over 50-60 years, you should have an experienced plumber come to inspect your plumbing. An aging home combined with dry weather is the perfect combination for plumbing problems.
Pipeline Cracks
If there has been a long period without rain, the ground can dry out and settle, causing pipes to crack. Pipeline cracks occur mainly when there’s low moisture in the ground. This causes pipes to age faster, crack, and lead to different types of leaks. Weather and ultraviolet rays can also damage exposed plumbing pipes if they’re not covered with insulation.
