get-your-house-ready-for-summer

Summer is here and it is an exciting transition from springtime! But it is also a time to take action in your home to avoid potential plumbing, drain systems and sewer system problems. Here are some tips from Arch Plumbing to get help get your home in tiptop shape for the warm weather. These steps will also save you energy and money!

Having more fun outdoors means more dirty clothes to wash! Check your washing machine hoses for any bulges, leaks or cracks. Leave at least 4 inches between your machines and the wall so your hoses don’t kink or get damaged. Never leave your home while the washer is running and replace your hoses every three years.

Ductwork: During the humid summer months, your ductwork can sweat and condensate, creating a backup if the drains are not clear. The seams can also leak which can cause condensation. For attics, make sure there is no water in the drain pan. If you do find water, call your local plumber right away because your ceiling could be in danger.

After your BBQ or cookout, be careful what you put in down your garbage disposal. Most are not equipped to handle things such as celery, banana peels, cornhusks or other stringy foods. Do not put fats or oils down your drain, as they will form clots in the pipes. Also, avoid stuffing potato mixes or any “just-add-water” food items down the drain, as they will create an instant clog when you add water. Running cold water at full pressure for 15 seconds before and after putting anything down the disposal will ensure it gets flushed through.

Before you go on vacation, turn down the temperature of your water heater to save money and energy.

During this time of year, sewer lines often get backed up because the summer rainwater enters the sewer pipes through small cracks. New tree root growth from the spring can also cause sewer backup issues because roots grow toward the sewer line as a source of nutrition.

Hire a licensed plumber to inspect your sewer line pipes. They can determine if you are susceptible to any sewer line problems or damage. Your plumber can help you understand your best treatment options for proper drain cleaning.
